A new leak suggests that GTA 5 is getting a major upgrade when it launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
GTA 5 is one of history's most successful projects, having first launched in 2013. Since then, the latest Grand Theft Auto title has come to PC, been remastered for PS4 and Xbox One, and is now even set to drop on next-gen consoles soon.
Now it seems that players have good reason to pick up a copy of the game yet again. As well as GTA V still being an incredible online multiplayer experience, it seems that the whole game may well get an overhaul.
Following GTA Online's biggest expansion ever, Rockstar Games appears to be preparing a special upgrade for next-gen players.
GTA 5 Upgrade May Use the Red Dead Redemption 2 Engine
According to new insider leaks from users 'Tez2' and 'alloc8or' on the GTA forums, we know a few new details about the upcoming GTA V next-gen port. First and foremost, it appears that GTA 5's next-gen upgrade may well be porting the game to the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine.
After the users discovered a line of code in the game's files that read: "rage::fwuiMessageBase," speculation soon began. The leakers believe that this line refers to Red Dead Redemption 2's RAGE Engine.
While you should take this news with a pinch of salt, the insiders state that this could well mean that GTA 5 may get a significant upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Those looking for a reason to purchase a third copy of GTA may have a real boost to entice them.
The switch to the RAGE Engine may lead to better visuals for the game, as well as boosts to FPS. However, it's not a complete remaster, so don't expect the upgrade to be huge, even if this leak proves correct.
Will GTA Online Have Character Transfers on PS5 and Xbox Series X?
Next up, there's good news for those who are invested in GTA Online on existing ports. It appears that you will be able to transfer a character to GTA Online on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, assuming a new leak is correct.
Also found in the GTA 5 files, the dataminers discovered the following code: "CHasCharacterToTransferDecisionPage."
This line likely indicates that existing GTA Online characters will be able to make the jump to next-gen yet again. Your character that started out on the Xbox 360 or PS3 can make it all the way to 2020's hardware.
The most recent GTA update adds new cars and a free submarine upgrade for all players. If you're yet to check it out, be sure to log in again soon.
Now that we know that you'll be bringing characters over to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, there's nothing holding us back from joining in the fun.
And although GTA 6 is confirmed to be in development, it'll be a while before we see more of it. Most likely, the game is being created using the RAGE Engine too.
Some fans even believe that Rockstar Games is trying out some GTA 6 features in GTA Online. But whether that is true or not, we'll have to wait and see.
