Gears of War or Fable Next to Get Remaster, Insider Claims

After the success of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, an Xbox insider claims that Gears of War or Fable are the next to be remastered.

Learning that a remaster of a classic game is in the works always gets the pulse racing.

Because, in theory, it can only be a good thing. Take a beloved game from yesteryear; give it the latest graphical bells and whistles, modernize the controls, and then package it in an easy-to-purchase bundle.

Except, as history has shown us, that isn’t always the case.

Remasters have begun to earn the reputation as ‘cash-grabs’, because, for every Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, there’s a GTA: The Trilogy. For every Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, a Mafia II Definitive Edition.

The potential for a beloved franchise to have its reputation tarnished is clear – and based on a credible Xbox insider, a major Xbox franchise is next up to run the remaster gauntlet.

Gears of War or Fable to Get Remaster

Besides blockbuster FPS, Halo, no other titles scream “Xbox” quite as much as Gears of War and Fable do.

Fable first appeared back on the OG Xbox in 2001, and Gears of War debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2006. Both are hugely popular parts of the Xbox ecosystem and fans would be excited to learn of the series’ being remastered.

And that’s exactly what is being proposed by Xbox insider, Nick Baker, co-founder of XboxEra.

Speaking on the XboxEra podcast, Nick revealed that a series in the “Microsoft family” was to get the “Master Chief Collection treatment”.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection was originally released on Xbox One in 2014. Featuring every mainline Halo game released until that time, all remastered to varying degrees. It was later released on PC and Xbox X/S.

Receiving largely positive reviews, it was, however, criticized for numerous bugs and matchmaking problems.

Gears of War or Fable?

While Nick wouldn’t put a name to the title (despite his claims to know), the live chat and his co-hosts put it to him that only Gears of War or Fable are legitimate candidates for such a collection.

Nick, with a mischievous smile, suggested that “Viva Piñata” could also be in the running.

Nick’s co-hosts postulated that Fable is the likely choice. Evidence being, a much-anticipated reboot of Fable has already been announced for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. A well-timed remaster of the original games could kickstart the hype ahead of a new title.

However, the odds on it being Gears of War were slashed when a clip of the discussion subsequently went viral on Twitter.

In a reply, The Verge Senior Editor, Tom Warren, said that the “gears are really turning” on this particular rumor.

And Gears of War can’t be ruled out. To this day, the series is hugely popular and a Gears of War remaster would arguably be easier than Fable.

Because while there are five mainline games in the Gears of War series (instead of Fable’s three), the technology used is much more in line with modern systems. As recently as 2014, the original Gears of War was remastered for an Xbox One release.

So, which one is it? A tie-in for the Fable reboot to get everyone up to speed? Or something to satiate Gears of War fans until a new title’s announced? We will simply have to wait and see.

Whatever happens, fans will hope that the game isn’t beset with as many problems as Halo Infinite currently is. From Big Team Battles being unplayable to buggy challenges, the game has many issues.

Though, at least it’s not Battlefield 2042 which has fans outraged at the fact it might go free-to-play!
