Balloons are returning to Fortnite after a long hiatus thanks to the Birthday event taking place today and are the best way to celebrate the occasion in style.
Fortnite’s 5th Birthday event begins on the 23 September and concludes on the 27 September. During that time, players will be able to access unvaulted birthday-themed items.
One such item is the Balloon, which was vaulted so long ago new time players may not be able to appreciate how exciting their return truly is.
Of course, if you’re going to attend the Birthday event, you might as well do it in style, so why not check out Fortnite’s Crew subscription service to get one-of-a-kind cosmetics?
What Are Balloons In Fortnite?
Balloons are an item in Fortnite that allows the player to float and take no damage when falling. They were introduced all the way back in Chapter 1 Season 6, and were later vaulted in Season 9.
Although their time in Fortnite was short-lived, the Balloon added a lot to the versatility of movement in the game.
How to Use Balloons In Fortnite
- To use a Balloon in Fortnite, simply select it in your inventory and then press the fire button – on consoles, that’s R2/RT, and on PC, it’s left click.
- You’ll blow up a balloon and attach it to your back. You can do this up to three times, at which point you’ll start going up into the air.
- Players have control over their Balloons and can release them easily with a button press. On PC, simply press CTRL, and on console, press the R3 button.
You can attach up to three Balloons and use them to float great distances, jump a little higher and take no damage while falling with them equipped.
However, if they’re shot by another player or burst at a great height while you’re in the air, you will fall dramatically and take all of the damage.
If you can’t find one immediately upon landing, it might be worth taming an animal so you can cover more ground faster. Just don’t forget to pet your wolf or boar to earn that extra XP.

Where Can You Find Balloons in Fortnite?
You can find balloons as floor loot, in chests, in supply drops, and in a Supply Llama across the Fortnite island, but this item is most likely to appear in the following areas:
- Rave Cave
- Herald’s Sanctum
- Cloudy Condos
- Chonker’s Speedway
It is worth noting Balloons have the greatest chance of appearing as floor loot.
There are, of course, other great landing spots in Chapter 3 Season 4, but the listed locations definitely have the highest chance of netting you with a Balloon or two.

What Is the Reward For Completing The Balloon Quest?
One of the birthday-themed quests is to use 5 Balloons, and the reward for doing so is the Celebratory Slice Pickaxe.
It’s a very easy quest to complete once you’ve found some Balloons, as all you need to do is use three, get rid of them, and then use two more.

Once you’ve celebrated Fortnite’s Birthday in style with balloons, you should check out the upcoming Fortnitemares event, especially if you want your spooky season fix.
And while you’re out there collecting balloons and completing Birthday quests, why not check out the Fortnite Reboot Rally event to unlock exclusive cosmetics with your friends?
