New Stats Reveal FIFA 21’s Biggest Facts & Myths

Moving along into the new year, EA Sports gamers are as enthused as ever about the dynamic footballing title. One Reddit user even went as far as conducting a case study, so let's have a look at some new FIFA 21 stats to explain certain situations in the game.

Ever wonder what the most popular Formation is in FIFA 21 Ultimate Team? Perhaps you're interested in knowing the best time window to log in and try your hand at the Weekend League.

Maybe you feel like you keep re-living the same game over and over. A crushing last-minute goal to seal defeat, or storming out to a 2-0 lead only to see your opponent score three unanswered.

Most regular FIFA players can relate to these seemingly scripted occurrences, but now we have the data to know for sure.

Stats Behind FIFA 21's Facts and Myths

Here's the best available study showing facts and figures behind some of FIFA 21's famous topics.

Thanks to our FIFA friend and subreddit user u/victor_foxtrot we have substantial data to take a closer look at some of these talking points.

The first point to tackle here is the discussion surrounding Formations. Is there a certain formation which is superior amongst others?

Victor_Foxtrot used halftime as a point to view and record his opponent's formation for the purpose of this study. In 311 Weekend League matches, the most popular formation remains the 4-2-3-1 (Narrow).

Over 20% of FIFA 21 opponents used this formation, however this is down from 27% in FIFA 20. The three next most popular formations were 4-4-2, 4-3-3 (Attacking), and 4-4-2 (Defensive).

It should be noted that the 4-4-2 formation doubled in popularity from 8% in FIFA 20 to nearly 16% in FIFA 21.

Best Time to Play FUT Champions

It's been common knowledge amongst FIFA players to not bother with the Weekend League until, well, the weekend. This is due to the influx of professionals (or those aspiring to be) attempting to grind out wins and climb the FUT Champions leaderboard.

Experienced FIFA players know to wait until Saturday or even Sunday to really ramp up the FUT Champions games. And now the case-study data backs up the claim.

Victor_Foxtrot (a self-proclaimed average FIFA player) has a record of 69-87 on Fridays, 81-73 on Saturdays, and 32-16 on Sundays. This is unsurprising, as by Sunday most hardcores have already completed their 30 Weekend League matches.

But what about blowing a 2-0 lead, or conceding first and knowing the game is over? Do these new FIFA 21 stats backup those claims as well?

Is 2-0 a Dangerous Lead in FIFA 21?

Many FIFA 21 gamers complain of storming out to a 2-0 lead, only to feel like the game is scripted towards their demise. Even a 3-0 lead in the first 45 can sometimes feel unsafe, so is there data behind these occurrences?

Well, according to Victor_Foxtrot, this likely has more to do with your personal tactics rather than a game pattern. A quick list of personal Weekend League matches dispelled these notions:

  • 2-0 up 71 times. 65-6 in those matches
  • 2-0 down 101 times. 10-91 in those matches
  • 3-0 up 48 times and never lost
  • 3-0 down 72 times and won only one once, (on pens)

Victor_Foxtrot suggests looking into your tactics should you find yourself continuously giving away the lead. Slowing things down and focussing on defending first can help kill off the game when you're holding a lead.

Does it Matter Who Scores First in FIFA 21?

A tale as old as time for both FIFA and world Football, does it matter who gets the first goal of the game? The first goal can be exhilarating as well as demoralizing, depending on when and for who it occurs.

According to Victor_Foxtrot, the first goal is more important than ever in FIFA 21. In 177 games scoring the first goal, Foxtrot went 131-46; subsequently the record was 51-129 when conceding first.

Coupling the first-goal data with the points about 2-0 and 3-0 leads, it seems absolutely paramount to find the back of the net before your opponent. Otherwise you may find yourself falling victim to a heartbreaking last-minute defeat like this.
