Industry analysts have weighed into the next Nintendo Switch debate. Providing their insight into the likelihood of seeing the Switch Pro in 2021.
We’ve suspected that Nintendo has been working on a follow up to the Switch console for some time. Our theory has always been that Nintendo is cooking the console up behind closed doors but are biding their time when it comes to revealing it.
Perhaps because the Switch Pro is simply not ready yet. Or because they don’t want to hype a console during the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – meaning three consoles would be competing for attention.
In our view, Nintendo’s plan is to let the hype surrounding next-gen die down before unveiling their successor to the Nintendo Switch. This way, their console can become the next major news story in the industry without sharing the spotlight.
The gaming industry is abuzz about the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S right now. So why make it a three-horse race when you can run unopposed?
Nintendo themselves have poured cold water on the rumors, breaking their silence about the Switch Pro. But while they said their focus is the current Switch models, they did nothing to contradict the likelihood of Switch Pro coming in 2021 at some point.
The prevailing theory is the Switch Pro could be coming holiday 2021. Giving the competition a full year, which is enough time to become old news. This also fits with what Nintendo has said.
Switch Pro Coming 2021? Or Will It Be Something Else?
Their attempts to pour water on the likelihood of Switch Pro coming in 2021 only strengthened our suspicions. That’s because Nintendo never entirely ruled it out. They discussed the present but avoided any mention of the future.
Nor did they address the facts. For example, we know Nintendo have engaged in talks with manufacturers of mini-OLED screens. Screens that would be capable of 4K on a portable device.
So it’s clear they are working on something, and that it’s very likely to be the next version of the Nintendo Switch. But now, industry analysts have provided fresh clues.
Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games has expressed his confidence that a follow up to the Nintendo Switch will appear in 2021. Saying, "I predict a beefed-up 4K device is coming during Nintendo's next financial year.”
The financial year begins in April 2021 and runs until April 2022. Therefore, this would be in line with the holiday 2021 theory.
Piers Harding-Rolls, who represents Ampere Analysis, shares this view. Last year he believed it was “unlikely” that we’d see a Switch Pro in 2020 but seeing one in 2021 would “make commercial sense.” – A view that is echoed by many.
The name Switch Pro is also far from confirmed. Nintendo is likely to position the console as an upgrade to the wildly successful Switch console rather than a replacement.
What Will Nintendo's Next Console Be Called?
Therefore, the Switch Pro works as an idea; it could be the 4K variant of the Switch family. But Nintendo could also opt to call it something like ‘The New Nintendo Switch’ like they did with the 3DS.
Of course, this is all just speculation, but expert analyst speculation is better than none at all. However, we’ll need to wait until Nintendo is ready to talk about the Switch Pro before we know more. Or wait for more patents to leak, possibly confirming their plans!
We’ve seen major leaks regarding the Switch Pro and other Nintendo titles drop in recent months.
