Elden Ring: Where to Find All Great Runes & What They Do

Great Runes in Elden Ring can completely turn the tide of a brutal battle if used correctly, but getting them can be challenging in itself.

Elden Ring can be an arduous uphill battle for players that aren’t focusing on creating the right builds for their playstyles. You will need to get familiar with multiple stats before you even think about venturing far.

Thankfully, we have you covered when it comes to Limgrave. But, eventually, you need to leave Limgrave. If you want to advance in Elden Ring, you need to keep finding more potent items, equipment, and weapons.

Some of the early game weapons will surprise you with how powerful they can be. But eventually, you’ll need to make your way to stronger items like the Meteorite Staff and Night & Flame Sword.

Then once you’ve leveled up your character, you’ll need to get your hands on some Great Runes. These are some of the most powerful items in Elden Ring.

But, obtaining them might prove to be rather difficult.

Every Great Rune’s Ability & Where To Find Them

Great Runes are powerful items dropped by Demi-gods in Elden Ring that will provide players with a temporary buff capable of changing the tide of battle.

Demi-gods are the main bosses in Elden Ring, which means that obtaining every great rune will be challenging.

Before you even start using Great Runes, then you’ll need to find yourself some Rune Arcs. Rune Arcs are what allow you to activate an equipped Great Rune.

But to even activate an equipped Great Rune, you will need to restore its power.

Once you’ve done this, then you’re ready to start using Great Runes and their powerful effects.

Godrick’s Great Rune

Effect: Raises all attributes by 5.

Where to Activate: Divine Tower of Limgrave

Where To Find It: Godrick’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Godrick the Grafted. Godrick is the first Demi-god that players will need to find to progress through the Elden Ring storyline. To get to him, you’ll need to progress through Stormveil Castle, the first legacy dungeon in Elden Ring, and defeat Margrit the Fell Omen. Once Margrit is defeated, you’ll be able to make your way deeper into the castle and fight Godrick the Grafted.

The fight with Godrick the Grafted can prove to be tedious, so you’ll need to learn some strategies before heading in.

Morgott’s Great Rune

Effect: Greatly raises maximum HP.

Where to Activate: Divine Tower of East Atlus

Where To Find It: Morgott’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Morgrott, the Omen King. Morgrott the true form of Margrit, the Fell Omen. You will find him located in Leyndell, the Royal Capital. Players can access his area from the Atlus Plateau.

Once at the Royal Capital, players will first need to defeat Godfrey, First Elden Lord. Then they can head deeper into the castle, where they will find Morgrott waiting for them. Morgrott is quick on his feet, so players will need to keep their distance to avoid getting caught in his attacks.

We recommend having a powerful weapon like the Sword of Night & Flame or the Moonlight Greatsword.

Rykard’s Great Rune

Effect: Restores HP upon defeating enemies.

Where to Activate: Divine Tower of West Atlus

Where To Find It: Rykard’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. Rykard is one of the main Demi-god bosses. He can be found in Mt. Gelmir. Just make your way through the Volcano Manor, and you’ll find his gate. Alternatively, players can also complete all three contracts for Tanith; she will teleport you directly outside the mist that takes you to the boss battle.

It is worth noting that Rykard has two phases where players will need to take down to full health bars. So it can seem a little drawn out. It’s good to have collected as many Golden Seeds as possible to upgrade the number of times you can heal with your Flasks!

Radahn’s Great Rune

Effect: Raises maximum HP, FP, and Stamina.

Where to Activate: Divine Tower of Caelid

Where To Find It: Radahn’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Starscourge Radahn. He can be found in the Redmane Castle in Caelid. Radahn is one of the main Demi-god bosses that you will need to fight in Elden Ring. There is no way to skip him if you’re looking to complete the storyline.

Make your way deep into the Redmane Castle to find him, but be prepared. This is one of the most brutal midgame fights, and you won’t be able to summon any spirits to help you. But it’s one of the best Great Runes in Elden Ring, so it’s worth the punishment.

Malenia’s Great Rune

Effect: Attacks dealt after taking damage will restore HP. Reduces the healing power of Crimson Flasks.

Where to Activate: Isolated Divine Tower.

Where To Find It: Malenia’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Malenia, Blade of Miquella. Malenia is an optional late-game boss, and to get to her. You need to know how to get to the Consecrated Snowland and Haligtree. Players will find her at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of Haligtree. Since this is a late-game boss, players will need to be seriously leveled up if they hope to best her quick and powerful attacks.

Thankfully, we’ve found a way that endgame players can quickly farm ruins to level up faster.

Mohg’s Great Rune

Effect: Grants a blessing of blood to phantoms.

Where to Activate: Divine Tower of East Atlus

Where To Find It: Mohg’s Great Rune is dropped by defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood. Although Mohg is a demi-god, this is an optional boss. Players will need to make their way to Mohgwyn Palace to fight Mohg.

Although this fight is incredibly challenging, obtaining the Purifying Crystal Tear can be highly beneficial for players seeing as it purifies the curse from Mohg’s terrifying rite of blood.

Great Rune of the Unborn

Effect: Used to respec your character.

Where to Activate: Automatically activated when received.

Where To Find It: Players will obtain the Great Rune of the Unborn after defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. To get to Rennala, players must head to Liurnia of the Lakes. From here, make your way to the Raya Lucaria Academy. You’ll find Rennala at the end of this legacy dungeon.

Once defeated, she will not die. Instead, she will allow players to respec their characters. This is incredibly useful, especially in the latter stages of the games.

But you’ll need Larval Tears to respec, so make sure you know where to look.

Elden Ring is an incredible game with a massive world. Great Runes are only one of the many things that players can do to improve their character.

And these are only the Demi-God bosses. This isn’t including Dragons and celestial beings like Astel Naturalborn of the Void that can annihilate even the strongest players.

Thankfully, there are spells like Comet Azur that can be equally chaotic.
