No, you do not need MW2 to play or download Warzone 2. Warzone 2 is a free-to-play game that can be downloaded without MW2 or any other games.

Players can already pre-load Warzone 2 into their desired platform to prepare for its November 16 release date.

Warzone 2 Benefits If You Own MW2

Although you do not need MW2 to play Warzone 2, there are some benefits to owning both, including:

  • The ability to unlock 14 different Operators that can be used in MW2, Warzone 2, and DMZ.
  • More ways to quickly level up your weapons in MW2, since the progression transfers over to Warzone 2.
  • Receive additional XP after every Warzone 2 match.
    • MW2 owners will also receive MW2 XP after every Warzone 2 match. This will allow them to level up their rank and Battle Pass quickly.
  • Access to additional content, such as the rewards players can earn from MW2 Raids.

Although, players looking to unlock weapons will also be able to do so by playing DMZ and finding Contraband Weapons.

Do Warzone 2 & Modern Warfare 2 Share Progression?

Yes, Warzone 2’s weapon, progression, and new inventory systems will be shared with Modern Warfare 2 and its new content systems.

This means that any weapons, attachments, or weapon platforms you unlock in Modern Warfare 2 can be used in Warzone 2.

Is Warzone 2 A Separate Game?

Yes, Warzone 2 is a completely separate game from Modern Warfare 2 and the original Warzone. Warzone 2 is a standalone Call of Duty battle royale game.

Although, both MW2 and Warzone 2 use the same launcher.

This is similar to MW 2019 and the original Warzone.

Does Warzone 2 Replace Warzone?

No, Warzone 2 does not replace Warzone. Instead, Warzone will transition into Warzone Caldera. This new version of Warzone will not have the weekly playlist updates, nor will it have Warzone Resurgence.

Those modes will transition over to Warzone 2. However, it has not been confirmed if the old Resurgence maps are in Warzone 2.
