Resource draining effects are a new gameplay system introduced to Diablo 4 with Season 1.
Much like most of Diablo 4’s mechanics, Resource draining effects are poorly explained in-game. It has left a lot of players scratching their heads as to what they do.
Fortunately, we’re going to go over everything you need to know about Resource draining effects below, including what they do and how to prevent them.

What Are Resource Draining Effects in Diablo 4?
Resource draining effects are new negative Affixes for Nightmare Dungeons introduced in Season 1. When in Nightmare Dungeons with this affix, your Primary Resource will drain continuously over time.
A lot of powerful builds rely heavily on using large amounts of Primary Resources, making this Affix a nuisance for any who come across it.
Each class has a different Primary Resource:
Class | Primary Resource |
---|---|
Barbarian | Fury |
Druid | Spirit |
Necromancer | Essence |
Rogue | Energy |
Sorcerer | Mana |

Here is the best way to identify if a Nightmare Dungeon will have a Resource draining effect:
- Head into the ‘Consumables’ tab in the Character Menu
- Select a Nightmare Sigil
- Check under ‘Dungeon Affixes’
- If the Nightmare Dungeon has the Resource draining effect, you will see it here
- You’ll find it below the Buff Affix highlighted in green. Debuff Affixes are not highlighted in any color

It’s important to note that Elite enemies have a chance to inflict Resource draining effects upon you, though this is very rare. The most likely way you’ll come across Resource draining effects in Diablo 4 is with Nightmare Dungeons.
How to Prevent Resource Draining Effects in Diablo 4
The best way to stop Resource draining effects in Diablo 4 Season 1 is to slot in the Determination Malignant Heart into any piece of Jewelry with an open Devious Malignant Socket.
The Determination Heart reduces the Resource draining effects by a flat amount and also buffs your Resource generation.
Here are the effects (for a level 20 character) of the Determination Heart:
- Determination Malignant Heart (Devious)
- Resource draining effects are 40-50% less effective. In addition, gain 3.0-8.0% increased Resource Generation.

The Determination Heart provides a huge decrease to your Resource drain when the effect is in place. It also adds a flat percentage increase to your Resource generation, which is helpful for all builds and situations in Diablo 4.
You can get the Determination Heart by defeating Elite Malignant Enemies in Malignant Tunnels. It can be slotted into any Jewelry piece with an open purple-colored Devious Socket. It’s available to all classes at any World Tier.

Another way to reduce Resource draining effects is to avoid Nightmare Dungeons with that Affix entirely! When you see Nightmare Sigils with that Affix, discard them by salvaging them at the Occultist.
You can craft other Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist to roll Nightmare Dungeons that do not have this annoying affix.
