Whispering Keys and Silent Chests in Diablo 4

At one point or other, you’ll stumble across a variety of curious locked chests when out exploring Sanctuary.

These are Silent Chests, and contain a random assortment of rare loot – they’re definitely worth your time. Unfortunately, you cannot open these chests unless you have a Whispering Key on hand.

Thankfully, the Purveyor of Curiosities has you covered – he’ll sell you Whispering Keys for 20 Murmuring Obols a pop.

There is no set spawn location for these chests, so it’s always handy to have a few Whispering Keys on your person at any given time.

How to Get Mumuring Obols in Diablo 4

By far the easiest and most effective way of getting Murmuring Obols is by taking part in and completing World Events.

Diablo 4’s World Events occur at random at certain points in Diablo 4’s open world. When one is happening, you’ll be notified by a triangle symbol on your map and an orange circle on your mini-map when close.

The event takes place within the circle and they are usually timed encounters that will see you taking on waves of increasingly difficult enemies either solo or with other players.

Once complete, a chest will spawn with a random variety of loot within it. It will always give 35 Murmuring Obols for your trouble.

At the start of the game, you can only carry a max cap of 500 Murmuring Obols at any given time, meaning that you should probably continually spend them at the Purveyor of Curiosities to make the most of these World Events.

There are two ways to increase your max capacity for Obols:

  • You can find certain Altars of Lillith in the world that will increase your capacity by 5
  • Increase your World Tier to World Tier 3 – Nightmare Mode. This will allow you to reach the third Renown reward tier that you can unlock in each region. Doing so will net you an extra 80 Obols for your max capacity.

That’s everything you need to know about the Purveyor of Curiosities in Diablo 4. They provide a great way of quickly replacing the weaker elements of your gear at any given time and are essential for Diablo 4’s late game.
