During your journey across Sanctuary in Diablo 4, you will often encounter varying damage indicators – white, yellow, blue, and orange – each representing a different damage output.
This diversity in damage displays is due to the new Overpower mechanic.
These color-coded numbers are not just for show. They bear significant meaning. The blue and orange numbers, in particular, signify Overpower damage – an innovative system introduced by Blizzard in Diablo 4.
When you see blue numbers, they represent Overpower damage. Conversely, orange numbers hint at the possibility of inflicting Critical Overpower hits.

What is Overpower Damage in Diablo 4?
Overpower damage provides additional damage to attacks in Diablo 4, adding up to the sum of your Life and Fortify stats. It appears as light blue numbers on the battlefield.
The base chance for an Overpower attack to occur in Diablo 4 is set at a relatively low 3%, and any skills cannot universally increase this probability. However, there are specific skills that, under certain conditions, can guarantee an Overpower hit, effectively bypassing the base 3% chance.
This bonus damage varies proportionately with your Life and Fortify stats. So, the higher these stats, the more potent the Overpower Damage your character will deal.
Here are some important notes you need to understand about the Overpower mechanic in Diablo IV:
- The bonus damage scales with the ability that Overpowerd.
- This means some item effects will add an Overpower Damage Bonus.
- There are weapon effects that guarantee Overpowered hits.
- Critical Overpower hits show up as orange on the battlefield. Regular critical hits show up as a light yellow.
- Critical Overpower is the most powerful form of damage players can inflict on an enemy. It combines both Overpower and Critical mechanics.
- Certain damage types cannot Overpower:
- Damage over time
- Channeled skills
- Passive abilities
It is easy to tell when your skill uses Overpower due to the light blue (aqua) damage indicators that appear over enemies.

All Damage Type Indicators in Diablo 4 Explained
There are four different colored damage indicators in Diablo 4 that players will come across.
- White – Base Damage
- Most common damage type.
- Yellow – Critical
- Random chance to occur equal to your Critical Strike Chance stat.
- Blue (aqua) – Overpower
- A 3% fixed chance for this damage to occur. Specific effects can ensure Overpowered strikes.
- Orange – Overpowered Critical
- Occurs when an Overpowered strike lands as a critical.
These four damage types will help guide you through Sanctuary and ensure you’re using the best abilities in Diablo 4.
