The Night’s Grasp is an exclusive effect for the Shard of Dawn Aspect in Diablo 4 and is an integral part of the Midwinter Blight event.
However, many players are confused about what it does and how to activate it, as the game doesn’t do a very good job of explaining it. Fortunately, it’s simpler than it first appears.
Below, we go into what Night’s Grasp effect does and how it interacts with the Midwinter Ward buff for the Shard of Dawn Aspect in the Midwinter Blight!
What is Night’s Grasp? Shard of Dawn Effect Explained
Night’s Grasp is a Cooldown effect for the Shard of Dawn Aspect that you can acquire during the Midwinter Blight event for Diablo 4. Once the Cooldown period is over, an Attack and Movement Speed buff is activated from the Shard of Dawn Aspect.
Here are the effects of the Shard of Dawn Aspect:
After 30 seconds of Night’s Grasp, gain Dawn’s Haste, increasing your Attack Speed by (25-35)% and Movement Speed by 20% for 12 seconds. While empowered by the Midwinter Ward, killing an enemy reduces Night’s Grasp’s duration by 1 second.
The Night’s Grasp effect is effectively a 30-second countdown:
After 30 seconds, Dawn’s Haste becomes active. It applies a significant Attack Speed and Movement Speed buff to your character for a total of 12 seconds:
After 12 seconds, Night’s Grasp becomes active again, starting another 30-second Cooldown. With the Shard of Dawn Aspect equipped, this cycle of Night’s Grasp/Dawn’s Haste is continuous.
Interestingly, the Cooldown for Night’s Grasp will be reduced significantly if you have a Midwinter Ward buff active!
What is Midwinter Ward?
The Midwinter Ward is a 20% damage buff to event-specific enemies within the Midwinter Blight event area. This means that you can deal 20% increased damage to Blightfiends and the Red-Cloaked Horror while the buff is active.
The Midwinter Ward also increases the effectiveness of the Shard of Dawn Aspect, reducing the Cooldown for Night’s Grasp by one second per enemy killed when it is active.
Depending on the number of enemies you can manage to kill in quick succession when the Midwinter Ward is active, you can potentially maintain the Dawn’s Aspect buff indefinitely!
How to Activate Midwinter Ward Buff
To activate the Midwinter Ward buff, you need to reach Tier 3 of the Midwinter Tribute Tier. You can increase your Midwinter Tribute Tier by exchanging Blighted Fragments, Lost Heirlooms, and Red-Cloaked Trophies for Midwinter Proofs at the Collection’s Table.
Once the buff is active, you will gain a 20% damage increase against event enemies for 6 minutes.
It’s important to note that the duration of the Midwinter Ward buff is currently bugged and will soon be changed in a hotfix. Diablo 4’s Community Manager responded to a query on Reddit, confirming that the buff is meant to last for 60 minutes:

Can you Use the Shard of Dawn Aspect in the Eternal Realm?
Yes, you can use the Shard of Dawn Aspect in the Eternal Realm! Blizzard confirmed in a recent Campfire Chat that you will be able to use it outside of the event after it has ended. Great for leveling!
However, you can only acquire the Shard of Dawn Aspect when the Midwinter Blight event is active, so it’s best to stock up while you can! This gives players only until January 2 to get it to keep in their inventory.
