Cyberpunk 2077: Epileptic Triggers Show A Blatant Disregard

Cyberpunk 2077 is just a couple of days away now, but worryingly concerns have been raised about Cyberpunk 2077's use of Epileptic triggering effects.

Accessibility. It's something that the video game industry hasn't paid too much attention to in the past. But it's an issue that has started to become more mainstream in recent years.

As it should be, everyone should have the right to enjoy video gaming without having to worry about being included.

CD Projekt's latest project, Cyberpunk 2077 has come under fire for its use of rapid flashing lights and imagery. A common trigger for people with epilepsy.

Individuals should also be able to pick up a game and know that there is the functionality or setting to alleviate their concerns.

The game is already experiencing some teething problems. You can read about why the reviews for Cyberpunk 2077 are worrying here.

Cyberpunk 2077: Epileptic Concerns

It's important to realize that one of the biggest triggers for people with epilepsy, is red and white flashing lights. It does limit the types of games that epileptics can play and enjoy.

Gamers with epilepsy have to navigate various obstacles and pay more attention than most people to epileptic triggers.

Often than not, the case is that they have to stop and objectively look at what kind of material or design choices might trigger their episodes.

Cyberpunk 2077, utilizes bright neon lighting, flashing imagery, and has a focus on the overwhelming cyberpunkian chaos of the future. This works really well for the game's breathtaking photo mode but doesn't help players with epileptic concerns.

In fact, there is an inconsiderate amount of elements that make Cyberpunk 2077 hard to enjoy for people with epilepsy.

One journalist and reviewer chronicled her experiences with the game alongside her own experiences with epilepsy.

Liana Ruppert writes that she "suffered one major seizure and felt several moments where I was close to another one".

Ruppert bravely faced her own condition in order to make other players aware of the severity of the problem in Cyberpunk 2077. You can read about her entire experience with the game here.

General Triggers

It's important that epileptic gamers are made aware of what triggers can be expected in Cyberpunk 2077.

It appears one of the main triggers apparent in Cyberpunk 2077 is the use of the color red. In many areas of the game, such as clubs and bars there is an overwhelming and dangerous use of these flashing colors.

This can very quickly become a problem for epileptic people and can easily overwhelm the senses without much warning.

It is recommended that some sort of light dimming program or eye saving mode be applied in order to help users with sensory overload.

There might also be a color-blind that could help to alleviate the use of color within the game.

Another element worth mentioning is the player interactions with Johnny Silverhand. A character famously portrayed by Keanu Reeves throughout the trailers for Cyberpunk 2077.

It is worth noting that when this character makes an appearance, it is often accompanied by a fast flickering blue glitching effect. This may affect those who are more prone to the effects of the color blue.

Cyberpunk 2077: Major Epileptic Trigger Warning

There is a feature present within Cyberpunk 2077 called Braindancing. It is a gameplay mechanic that allows the player to interact with memories of the deceased.

With this mechanic there comes a heavy trigger warning for people with epilepsy. It features very strong red and white blinking LED's which according to Ruppert, "are much like the actual device neurologists use in real life to trigger a seizure for diagnostic purposes.

This is very important to recognize as this may directly induce very severe epileptic attacks.

It is recommended during moments where a headset is introduced, to look away from the screen altogether. This is a sequence that is worryingly and hopefully unintentionally designed to trigger epileptic seizures in Cyberpunk 2077.

Once the player is inside of the Braindance gameplay feature it is important to note that there are still basic triggers within this. The BD features a range of different layers for the player to dive into.

Each of the different layers has different, specific animations that could easily invoke a response. So do be careful during these sequences and take the necessary precautions.

Cyberpunk 2077: Launch Day

We hope that players have been made aware of the sensitive dangers that are apparent in Cyberpunk 2077. It is very important to continually think about Accessibility and Inclusivity in gaming in order to benefit everyone.

The game is set to launch in just a couple of days on December 10th. With a map that is reported to be twice the size of GTA 5. Its clear players will have an abundance of content to look forward to.

Until the game launches on December 10th however, you might want to learn how to get the Witchers sword in Cyberpunk 2077. Make sure to preload the game beforehand as well.
