Call of Duty 2023 is set to be developed by Sledgehammer Games according to Insider Gaming. This comes after previous suggestions that the 2023 release would be a “premium DLC” for Modern Warfare 2.
It now looks like Activision has changed its mind and has instead opted for a brand new standalone release for this year.
While the title of the next game has yet to be revealed, key dates for the next installment of Activision’s first-person shooter have been leaked.

MW2 Paid Expansion Cancelled
Originally, the plan for Call of Duty in 2023 was supposed to only be an MW2 Paid Expansion. This $70 DLC was reportedly set to feature a ton of old-school Call of Duty maps.
It was also expected that this expansion would bring more content to the campaign of the game as well. However, there was little information about the campaign additions.
Most recently, in their fourth quarter and yearly financial results, Activision did reveal there was work underway on the next premium release of the Call of Duty franchise.
Although, this was thought to be in reference to the expansion.
Across the Call of Duty franchise, our teams are working to amplify the success of the fourth quarter, with 2023 plans including even more engaging live services across platforms and the next full annual premium release in the blockbuster series.
Activision Blizzard
While the paid expansion was initially the plan, the publisher has decided to change their mind. It now seems that Call of Duty 2023 will in fact be its own fully-fledged game, separated from Modern Warfare 2.
However, with Activision dropping the MW2 expansion, the next CoD game is reportedly still set in the Modern Warfare world.
Due to this information, the leaker suggests that Call of Duty 2023 could be titled “Modern Warfare 3”.
This would make sense considering Sledgehammer Games were a significant part of the development of the original Modern Warfare 3 back in 2011.
However, for the time being, fans must wait to see what the next game delivers and instead enjoy all of the new content for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.
