It could be time for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to make a return, according to a new leak.
Many gamers saw Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) as a return to form for the popular shooter franchise. Stealing the name from one of the most popular original Call of Duty titles to date, the new game went on to see similar success.
Developer Infinity Ward took incredible measures to ensure that this installment felt like a groundbreaking title for gamers everywhere. Now though, it may already be time for a follow-up to the best-selling game.
Infinity Ward is allegedly set to take the reigns on the next Call of Duty title, following Black Ops Cold War. This gives the company only two years to work with, as opposed to the standard three year turnaround time.
This quick release is likely due to the internal issues plaguing Sledgehammer Games that led to Treyarch taking over Cold War’s development. Now, Activision appears to be leaving the franchise in the hands of just two development teams.
Modern Warfare 2 May Release in 2021
According to reliable leaker Tom Henderson, the 2021 installment of Call of Duty is looking likely to be a Modern Warfare title. The leaker doesn’t have much information to go on just yet, but it’s not a big leap to imagine that this is Modern Warfare 2.
What the leaker does confirm is that the game will take place in a modern-day setting once again. Should Modern Warfare 2 be confirmed, this sequel will likely follow on from the events of the recent title.
This will take over the mantle from probably the most beloved Call of Duty title of all time. 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 made history, and it’s still looked back on fondly whenever the ‘best shooter’ debates come up.
For many, a Modern Warfare 2 Remastered would be the perfect Call of Duty game to drop in 2021. And it’s not impossible that this could be the case.
Could Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Be Coming?
Speculation from Henderson indicates that Modern Warfare 2 Remastered could come bundled with a new remake. This would be in much the same manner as Infinite Warfare came with Modern Warfare Remastered back in 2016.
Whether this is likely or not isn’t quite clear. It would certainly drive up sales, but Activision is currently moving towards a more Season-based battle pass system to boost earnings in recent titles.
Splitting the player base between Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 2 Remastered may well be as foolish as it is confusing. Perhaps the company would be better off focussing on a Remaster for now and giving their developers space to breathe.
Right now, players are debating whether Black Ops Cold War is a downgrade from Modern Warfare. The game hasn’t even been released yet, but many community members are very vocal about not liking what they see.
Despite that fact, the Black Ops Cold War Beta is the most downloaded CoD Beta in history. It’s clear that the fans are there, but they’re waiting for that perfect Call of Duty title that recaptures the older days.
Much like Modern Warfare 2 Remastered would.
