A new Legend of Zelda leak suggests the release date of the sequel to Breath of the Wild, and it could be coming much sooner than expected.
Given the circumstances, Nintendo had a very prolific 2020.
The Nintendo Switch continued to sell like gangbusters, Animal Crossing: New Horizon tore through their sales expectations, and even an understated release like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity procured a great financial success.
It's assumed that Age of Calamity performed so well because of its connection to Breath of the Wild. But who can blame fans for becoming so attached?
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been crowned one of the best games of the last decade. Its sprawling landscapes, gorgeous art style, and sharp, exciting gameplay roped in fans of the series both old and new.
It revitalized the series and even brought it up to par in sales with 3D Mario games for the first time ever. Breath of the Wild has made Link and Zelda household names more than ever before.
It's so popular that people are still poking around in its code, trying to find new details. In their digging, one modder has been able to modify NPCs using their own Miis.
And maybe, its long-awaited sequel could be with us much sooner than we previously expected.
If you need a refresher on the game, here's everything we know about Breath of the Wild 2 so far.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
Ever since the game's surprise announcement at E3 2019, fans have been desperate to know more about Breath of the Wild 2. The announcement trailer didn't offer much, but it confirmed that we'd return to the world of the first game, in a true sequel.
It's not often that a Zelda game gets an official tie-in to another of its games. The most recent was 1991's A Link to the Past, which was a prequel to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
The surefire success of Breath of the Wild practically confirmed a sequel to fans despite a lack of mainline sequels in the series. No Zelda game had ever performed so well, and fans were desperate to return to the Kingdom of Hyrule.
Breath of the Wild 2 is expected to be a launch title for the Switch Pro, too. This makes it likely that the game will make use of the console's upgraded processing power, and be one of Nintendo's biggest games yet.
Breath of the Wild leaks and rumors have been circulating ever since the sequel's announcement. Speculation has been rife as to when we'll get to see more of the game.
But if a new leak is to be believed, then we might not be waiting much longer.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Release Date Leak
It looks as though the release date for Breath of the Wild 2 has been leaked by an Austrian retailer.
On Reddit, a user has pointed out a listing on the website of retailer Gameware. The listing says that the long-awaited Zelda sequel is "coming out in the 2nd quarter of 2021".
This could mean one of two things, but thankfully, both are exciting.
If this leak refers to the 2nd quarter of the calendar year, this means that we could see the game's release between April and June of this year. In the world of video games, this is an unprecedented turnaround time. If this was the case, Nintendo will have been working overtime on this game.
The most likely event is that the leak is referring to the statistics of the financial year. The second quarter of the financial year will be from July to September 2021.
This isn't the only exciting leak kicking about, either; a new Nintendo leak suggests a new Pokémon Direct could be coming soon.
Given the relatively short production time of Breath of the Wild 2, it's more likely we'll see the game released later on. But, of course, Nintendo has surprised us before and could be springing the title on us nice and early.
It's a good time to be a Nintendo fan right now, as a new Mario leak has teased an unexpected new game. Plus, the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes are suggested to have Let's Go-style catching by a new leak.
