A new teaser from Activision confirms why Russell Adler is being hunted and exactly when Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will take place.

The marketing for Black Ops 6 is truly beginning to ramp up, and we’re getting almost daily teases from Call of Duty’s social media.

Recently, fans were tasked with uncovering a mole in the CIA, one that was quickly revealed to be Black Ops Cold War’s Russell Adler.

Now, it appears that a wheelchair-bound Frank Woods is also going rogue in the upcoming storyline, and attempting to either aid – or take down – Adler by himself.

When Does Black Ops 6 Take Place?

According to a new CIA internal document released on Activision’s social media, Black Ops 6 is set to take place in 1990.

The document itself is dated May 30, 1990, only a few months before the start of the Gulf War, which began on August 2, 1990.

Seeing as early leaks alleged that Call of Duty 2024 would have a Gulf War setting, and given that Saddam Hussein has already appeared in a live-action trailer, we expect the game to be set between 1990-1991.

This would put it roughly 10 years after the events of Black Ops Cold War, and shortly after Frank Woods lost the use of his legs in Black Ops 2.

However, new The Truth Lies marketing stunts by Activision suggest that the game may also have a more modern setting, perhaps in a dual timeline setup. We saw this in the aforementioned Black Ops 2, and it’d certainly be an interesting addition to the game’s campaign.

What Did Russell Adler Do?

According to the CIA document released by Call of Duty, Russell Adler is wanted on charges of espionage, treason, and falsifying official documents.

This likely ties into the ongoing The Truth Lies campaign, which alleges that history isn’t as we remember it.

In Activision’s promotional marketing, a rebel faction reports that historic world leaders have been hiding a war from the public’s eyes, while pretending that it doesn’t exist at all.

“Adler is highly trained, knowledgeable, and lethal. Do not approach,” the document reads.

We already got an early look at Adler as he will appear in the Black Ops 6 reveal trailer, thanks to Activision accidentally uploading the wrong thumbnail on a recent video.

For a proper look, we’ll have to wait until the Black Ops 6 Direct on June 9!
