The popular Grief mode could be returning to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies, at least according to a new rumor.
COD Zombies is back in a big way with Black Ops 6. Not only is Treyarch’s upcoming undead survival game mode bringing back round-based maps, but it also features new and returning mechanics, as well as two experiences to play on launch day!
But we’re yet to hear much about Black Ops 6’s post-launch plans, aside from the confirmation that Nuketown is returning and another Zombies map is on the way.
Now, a new leak suggests that Grief mode could be one of the first pieces of seasonal content to drop in Black Ops 6 Zombies.
Is Grief Mode Coming to Black Ops 6?
Yes, at least if recent leaks can be believed, it appears that Grief mode will arrive in Black Ops 6 Zombies as part of its post-launch content.
The game mode was first leaked by ForwardLeaksAlt over on X (formerly Twitter). According to the known leaker, Grief Mode temporarily appeared in the Black Ops 6 Steam database, as part of a series of status strings.
For those unaware, status strings allow users to view their friend’s current in-game status. For example, users will display a status like ‘[Friend] is playing Grief on Liberty Falls’ when viewed from your friend list.
However, the Grief mode string has reportedly already been deleted from the Steam backend after presumably being made live early.
In addition to ForwardLeaks’ report, YouTuber GlitchingQueen has also confirmed that she’s heard from a reliable source that Grief will arrive in a seasonal update.
This time, the user claims that their information doesn’t come from the Steam code, but instead from a source that has previously leaked that the Jet Gun would return in Black Ops 6 – a statement we now know to be true!
What Is Grief Mode?
Grief is a game mode that first appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies, and almost appeared in Black Ops 4 before being scrapped.
Two teams of players enter into a game of COD Zombies, where they are each tasked with surviving against the undead for longer than their opponents.
The teams cannot directly harm one another, however they can hinder each other’s progress by refusing to open doors, blocking passages, or knifing an enemy player to stun them and delay revives.

In addition, Zombie Flesh can be thrown at players to cause a horde of zombies to attack that location.
When an entire team is downed, the other squad must survive until the end of the round to secure the win. If both teams go down, all players revive and the final round restarts.
We’d certainly like to see Grief mode come back in Black Ops 6, and we’re sure the game’s community agrees.
However, it appears that if Grief is to make a return, we shouldn’t expect it to be available at release.
