The best selling game of 2020 has finally been revealed after months of speculation.
2020 may have been a difficult year for developers and players alike, but the statistics have finally been unveiled regarding the game that sold the most copies over the last 12 months.
Gaming has been a safe space for many people across the globe this year. With the raging global pandemic, many have been forced into their homes and developers have been forced to change their working environments. Luckily, the gaming world doesn't slow down so easily, and hundreds of great games have seen release.
We even saw the release of the next generation of consoles, with the Xbox Series X & S warring with the Playstation 5 to herald the arrival of a new era in gaming. They're also taking hints from each other, with Microsoft asking fans what DualSense features to use in their controllers. Luckily for us, the consoles have sold incredibly well and brought with them some brilliant games.
The Best Game of 2020 Contenders
2020's best games have been widespread in scope and genre. The titans of Nintendo welcomed a huge array of games to their Switch console this year. Animal Crossing: New Horizons dominated social media upon its release, and is the series' highest-selling offering.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to lead the charge of popular games on the Switch, despite its 2017 release date. Plus, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was a hit as Nintendo's holiday release.
Xbox brought their new consoles to life with the likes of Gears 5 and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Yet, Playstation has the favour of fans in the war for the best console exclusives.
The Last of Us: Part II and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales made waves in the industry and continue to sell exceptionally well. Who knows, maybe if Sony's Playstation 5 stock was more rigorous, they could even have sold more.
Minecraft continues to sell impossibly well, joined on the list by already existing games Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and GTA V.
Fans just can't seem to get enough of these games, and it would be no surprise to see them show up next year too.
But of course, there can only be one winner.
The Highest Selling Game of 2020
According to NPD, collating the dollar value of each sale via physical release and full game digital sales, the highest selling game of 2020 is...
Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War!
That's right, the latest entry in the Call of Duty series takes the cake, followed closely by its predecessor. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare snakes behind it, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons taking third place.
The game is selling inexorably well, spurred on by the popularity of the free battle royale spin-off Warzone. Activision takes up 3 spots on the list, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 earning the 20th position.
Modern Warfare's appearance on the list is surprising at first glace, given its release last year. But, as it turns out, it still has a huge playerbase.
Sony and Nintendo are the publishers with the most games on the list, with 4 games each making appearances.
The list is incredibly impressive and showcases just how many great games we were lucky enough to play in 2020.
It's looking like 2021 could be a big year for Nintendo, too. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes have been leaked, and Bowser's Fury will make a fan-favorite character playable. And if you're a big Nintendo buff, you can find out your most played Switch game of 2020.
