The PS5 and Xbox Series X are launching during a challenging period of history. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused production issues, leading to their being less stock than either Sony or Microsoft would like. But the pandemic will also cause problems with distribution.
Social distancing measures will make public sale events, midnight queues the usual hubbub that surrounds a console release difficult. Stores will still need to supply those who pre-ordered a PS5 and Xbox Series X.
But they’ll need to do so safely. This means coming up with novel ways to deliver on their pre-order promises but without attracting a crowd.
We’re living in the age of online pre-orders and home delivery. Yet some people still enjoy the excitement of picking up their new console in store.
Be it loyalty to a store brand or the fun of participating in person; some gamers relish the shared excitement of a console launch.
The same thing happens during the release of a new iPhone. Or even the next chapter in a beloved book series.
Best Buy's Pre-order Plans
But this time around, fans are going to need to enjoy the hype without gathering in groups. As a result, Best Buy has invited their customers who’ve pre-ordered a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to make an appointment to pick up their new console.
Best Buy first emailed their customers to invite them to arrange an appointment. First was to pick up their Xbox Series X/S consoles on the 10th of November.
They then sent out a similar email. This time to those who’ve pre-ordered a PS5, inviting them to pick up their consoles on the 12th of November.
The emails also include opening times and instructions about how each customer can arrange their slot to avoid disappointment on the day.
