After a rocky year for all industries, Europe's highest selling boxed video game of 2020 has been revealed.
The gaming industry has had a hard time keeping up with the turbulence of 2020. The global pandemic forced many developers back into their own homes, places not exactly optimised to push out AAA games.
Controversy boiled from this, with Cyberpunk 2077's buggy release to Nintendo's numerous joycon drift legal battles, the video game industry's 2020 didn't have a chance to become boring.
But, devs adapted. Many were still able to provide some quality games for players to enjoy while locked down in our homes.
Nintendo most notably dominated the socially-distanced market, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons taking the world by storm and flooding our social media for months.
But now, we know which game truly took over the European market this year. And it's not all that suprising.
2020's Best Selling Game: The Contenders
Of course, Nintendo had a big year. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best selling game the series has ever seen, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to dominate the Switch's sale numbers. It's a shocking turn, given that the game is merely a deluxe port of a Wii U game.
Nintendo also suprised fans by filling their holiday slot with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Players weren't sure the niche style of the "Warriors" games would translate to the mainstream even with a Zelda lick of paint, but it sold gangbusters.
Xbox and Playstation debuted their next-gen offerings in 2020; the Xbox Series X & S, and the Playstation 5. A flurry of games welcomed themselves to the next generation through these consoles, including the latest games in the Call of Duty and FIFA franchises.
Xbox threw Gears 5 and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, but couldn't boast the best console exclusives of the next generation. This title of course went to Sony, with Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Last of Us; Part II going over a treat with fans.
But of course, there can be only one winner, and Europe's best seller is a tough one to top...
Europe's Best Selling Boxed Game of 2020
GfK Entertainment has made a new report, confirming the region's best selling physical game of 2020.
The evaluation is based on sales across (take a deep breath);
Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Phew.
The results are in, and 2020's Europe Best Seller is...
Yeah, we saw this coming. Europe (especially the UK) loves its football, and the culture around FIFA remains passionate with every single addition to the series.
The top three of these results were rounded out by Nintendo's biggest games of the year, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 deluxe.
The latest FIFA was the highest selling game in 16 of the 19 countries surveyed. Russia favourted The Last Of Us: Part II, Finland loved Minecraft, and France were too into their islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
FIFA's dominance of Europe is no surprise, as they're ranked monumentally well in video game sales for years. Their top billing on video game charts branches back all the way to 2017.
Europe best seller is another trophy to add to EA's shelf, but the same can't be said for other territories. NPD's research across the world and including digital sales provides a different outcome.
With the year now over, we look forward to some new games we might get to see more of in 2021. A huge Battlefield 6 leak shows that the new game will be bigger and better than ever before.
